Rebekah is our Rebell of the month for August! Rebekah has come so far on her journey of recovery from Lyme disease. It was very interesting to work with someone who has had such a dynamic background in the same industry as me. Watching Rebekah from where we started to where she is right now is truly amazing. Here is her story!
I have been a fitness instructor and rehab therapist for 20 years, prior to getting Lyme disease 2 years ago. I have taught many different kinds of classes throughout the years- yoga, Pilates, kettlebells, water aerobics, women’s weight training. I have also been an adjunct instructor at SMSU for 9 years, teaching step aerobics and yoga.
Thoughts about strength training before & after
I absolutely love weight training and working hard. Because of the Lyme, I had not worked out for a year. Lyme disease caused sever neurological symptoms for me…I had severe memory loss, vertigo, arthritis pain, fatigue and balance problems. It was humiliating and heartbreaking, and also brought me into anxiety and depression. I felt suicidal…but of course have children, my husband and friends and family. While I would never have taken my own life, I had many, many times where I wanted to die in my sleep. I felt that I had lost everything, and my entire life was turned upside down.
Challenging barriers you overcame
Wow, we’ve overcome so much!!! In the beginning of our training in February, I cried a lot on the way home because my body (my life) had lost so much. I felt like I was going to pass out a lot, so William and I had to learn how to communicate honestly so we could work on what I could for that day. Now, I’m pulling heavy weights, working on Olympic lifts, swinging 45 pound bells, and my mobility and balance have improved so much!!! I am so much better, and feel like I have my life back!
I do not have fatigue anymore, and I feel like I’m back! I had to take a lot of time to work with what I had for that day. Some days, William would have to stop me and remind me that this part of my journey isn’t about pushing through…it’s about working with what I have for that day. And every day is different. I have also gained a lot of weight with the Lyme. William also made me stop talking negatively about my body, and has helped me to back off on that expectation and focus on recovering.
Changes your family/friends noticed
I’m not crabby and sad, I have so much energy, and am able to stay up late again!
They have noticed how much better my health is, and that I’m back to being funny again.
What do you tell people about our training
I have referred 7 people, and tell people all the time what a difference Restore Strength has made in my life! It’s hard for me not to cry as I write all of this. William really has been a God send to me. People think that you’re supposed to be in shape before you start working with a coach. You don’t!!! If you’ve fallen somehow… in your life, you need someone who knows how to pick you up, and what to do to start supergluing those pieces of yourself that have been shattered. Out of shape, lost, overweight, sad, want to change your life? Hire a trainer! What you’re doing on your own really isn’t working. Do something different, and hand the reins over to someone that knows how to help you!
What do you enjoy about training here
William is the best trainer I’ve ever had in my entire life. He’s knowledgeable, and makes you feel like you are the most important person in the world to him…. even when there are other people in the gym during sessions.
3 benefits you’ve noticed
1.My balance is better.
2. My depression.
3. Anxiety have improved greatly, and my pain has decreased greatly.
My time in the jungle is my proudest and happiest time of my week!
What makes the difference
I needed someone just right for this time in my life, and William has been the perfect coach at just the right time. I am so grateful to be here and I’m so relieved and grateful that my Lyme had improved so much. Without a doubt, William has helped me survive.
If you think you’re too old, too out of shape, too fat, too tired, or too broken…let that shit go and get yourself a good trainer and coach. It will change your life!
Rebekah has been tested time and time again, and she refuses to give up, this is something that I truly admire and respect about her. When times get tough she prepares herself and manages through whatever trial we will face. From teaching her how to breath to learning how to do Olympic lifts, Rebekah has a truly unique story. It’s been such an honor being at her side and seeing her regain her life.
